Do I need a passport to travel to Mexico?

For travel between the United States and Mexico prior to DECEMBER of 2006...
If you are a US citizen and you are traveling between the US and Mexico PRIOR to December 31, 2006, you do NOT need a passport to enter Mexico and to re-enter the United States.  You do need a certified copy of your birth certificate and a government issued photo I.D. if you are not traveling with a passport.

A certified copy of your birth certificate may be obtained from the Department of Health in the state in which you were born.  Most departments will have a web site that can easily be found by doing a search on the internet for "your state" department of health.  These sites will have a section on obtaining a birth certificate.

An acceptable government issued photo I.D. would be a valid driver's license.

For travel between the United States and Mexico as of DECEMBER 31, 2006...
All US citizens will be required to have a passport to travel to/from Mexico as of December 31, 2006.  To obtain a US Passport or for more information, go to http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html.
